Space is limited by grid size, but also by my ability to stock Tetris. Time doesn’t stop fiddling around in your pocket, so something as simple as injecting a health syringe requires tactical consideration. To even view inventory, Doc needs enough space to place the crate in the world (either on the ground or on a table). It sounds silly to talk about stock grids so hard, but it’s more than that.Īlmost everything that can be picked up exists in the briefcase as a 3D model, not a text doodle on a list. Probably my favorite item in the game is the doctor’s briefcase, which has a grid-based inventory system. The Ring is a genius of immersive tech, but it’s just one of Gloomwood’s cool story design choices. It’s a good thing Gloomwood includes its version of the Thief Meter – the always-visible ring on the doctor’s hand that glows according to how noticeable you are. It’s a wake-up call for modern stealth games like Dishonored, Watch Dogs, and Hitman, which train me to feel largely invisible while crouching. Gloomwood is a rare stealth game that happily lets you step too far into the light or jog when you should be walking. From there, context comes from scraps gleaned from written notes and enemy dialogue.Ī chattering guard might have shared some other funny story clips, but if so, I’d almost certainly be distracted by tricky stealth encounters. A shadowy figure quickly provides a way to escape and grab your gear, and that’s basically all the directions the game offers. You are an unknown doctor (an “outsider”, according to your captor), rotting in a prison of fish guts. Gloomwood starts by throwing you into a nasty pit. What I don’t like is that, right now, it’s not enough. I love the lethality of my pointy cane sword, the click of the revolver as I check ammo, and the satisfaction of walking past an unsuspecting thug in the dark shadows. New Blood does get the basics down-its opening levels are creepy, with wide spaces with multiple solutions and looming guards, just the right amount of silliness. Now releasing in Early Access, I’m happy to say Gloomwood is getting great. Good immersive sims only come out every few years, so I’ll do my best, but that brief vertical slice leads me to believe New Blood Interactive has something special here: a new-Victorian Stealth gameplay with a bloodborne vibe and thief backstabs, shadow jumps and constant vulnerability. I rarely jump right into a game and watch it develop as closely as possible, but that’s the effect dark forest (opens in new tab)The demo was on me when it came out on Steam in 2020.
